Trace the templates

Print the full-size templates at 100 percent and check the reference square before cutting. Spray-mount them to hardboard so you only tune the curves once, then label the left and right parts clearly.

Cut the frame pairs

Rough-cut each cedar part 2 to 3 mm proud of the line with a jigsaw. Stack mirrored pairs with double-stick tape and flush-trim them together so both sides of the chair sit evenly.

Assemble the seat

Clamp the two side frames to a flat surface and screw the front and rear stringers square before adding slats. Use a spacer block between each slat so the waterfall curve stays even.

Hang the back

Set the back fan with two temporary clamps and sit in the dry assembly before driving screws. A 5 degree change at the bottom noticeably changes the recline, so test the angle now.

Break the edges

Round every reachable edge with a block plane or 1/8 inch roundover bit, then hand-sand the arms and front lip. Cedar splinters easily, and the chair should feel smooth before any finish touches it.

Questions builders ask

Paint or oil?

Either. Cedar silvers beautifully if you do nothing at all.
