The build, step by step

BUILD MODE — TAP A NUMBER TO CHECK OFF0/5

Flatten the slab

Shim the slab so it cannot rock, then level the router-sled rails before the first cut. Take 1 mm passes across the grain and mark high spots with pencil so you know when the whole face has been touched.

Stabilize the check

Lay out butterfly keys so they bridge the crack at right angles, then rout the mortises in two depths. Sneak up on the fit with a chisel; the keys should press in firmly without forcing the crack wider.
